MACBETH is one of Shakespeare’s shortest plays, but it is loaded with action and dramatic turns. The events tumble forward so quickly Macbeth feels powerless to stop them. For Macbeth, the events of the play bring the adventure and terror of his familiar battlefield to the supposed peaceful and trusted boundary of his home. He is caught in an endless circle of pain, destruction and death brought on by his own misguided choices. Once Macbeth agrees to the fate of the play, he is powerless to leave the destructive and deadly path of his actions. He fools himself into believing he will not reap the consequences of his own choices. Shakespeare’s Macbeth is desperate for love, recognition, honour and friendship. Desperate for power…Desperate. Just desperate. The performance uses a cinematic way of story-telling: a straight line of action, a hypnotic soundtrack, sober but expressive costume, and the use of light and fog to create an atmosphere that similar to popular history an fantasy productions. BSC’s Macbeth may very well appeal to a younger audience due to it’s cinematic flavour.
