Dead Leaf Butterfly brings together musicians from Canada, Belgium, Germany and Spain in Berlin, with four different musical histories in the room. A tune may begin with a clear melodic line, then lose its edges as the players pull it into a louder, freer conversation. The trumpet, vibraphone, bass and drums have plenty of space to disagree, regroup and change direction.
The group calls its sound a kind of experimental free jazz pop. That combination makes sense once the music starts moving: there is a feel for melody, but no obligation to keep it neat. Compositions give the four musicians a place to begin; improvisation decides where they end up. Listen for the moment when a phrase seems to vanish, only to return in a completely different shape.

Bei Dead Leaf Butterfly treffen in Berlin Musikerinnen aus Kanada, Belgien, Deutschland und Spanien aufeinander, jede mit ihrer eigenen musikalischen Geschichte. Eine Melodie kann ganz klar anfangen und dann ihre Konturen verlieren, wenn die Musikerinnen sie in ein lautes, freies Gespräch ziehen. Trompete, Vibraphon, Bass und Schlagzeug dürfen widersprechen, sich wiederfinden und plötzlich die Richtung wechseln.
Die Band beschreibt ihren Sound als experimentellen Freejazzpop. Das passt: Die Lust an Melodien ist zu hören, aber niemand muss sie ordentlich zu Ende spielen. Die Kompositionen geben dem Quartett einen Ausgangspunkt; die Improvisation bestimmt den Weg. Manchmal verschwindet eine Phrase fast ganz und taucht kurz darauf in einer anderen Gestalt wieder auf.
