Maltese-English singer-songwriter Alexandra Alden makes music that feels like sunlight hitting the darkened corners of a room — intimate and disarming, a sudden warm exposure of things usually left in the shadows. Alden’s songs weave a whimsical, memorable world marked by her distinct voice. They are sonic soliloquies: confessional indie-folk with the raw emotional intensity of Big Thief and Phoebe Bridgers, the delicate literary precision of Sufjan Stevens, and the timeless aching stillness of Nick Drake and Laura Marling.
Alden came up the hard way. Before the stages and the awards, there were the odd jobs — housemaid, barmaid, waitress — the kind of unglamorous groundwork that has a way of making its way into songs. A period of profound personal upheaval followed, which saw her retreat to the mountains to rebuild, and ultimately gave birth to her latest album ‘When Is It Too Late?’ (2025), acclaimed by both OOR and Clash Magazine and hailed as her most fully realised work to date. Finished at the Bert Jansch Studio in Frome — home to Flyte, and a space connected to Big Thief — the album is inspired by the liminal spaces of Edward Hopper, the poetic precision of Sylvia Plath, and the wide-open driving melancholy of The War on Drugs. It is a record that finds beauty in the in-between — the neon haze of a late-night club giving way to the quiet of a morning alone.
In her native Malta, Alden is a genuine household name. She landed two #1 singles on national radio at just 18, served as a judge on X Factor Malta, and performed her song Wild Honey & Thyme at a national protest in defence of freedom of speech — a rare instance of mainstream success and radical honesty existing comfortably side by side. She is the winner of the Ad Van Meurs Prijs (NL) for Darling, voted the most beautiful song, a JCI Cultural Ambassador Award recipient, and voted Person of the Year 2019 by LovinMalta.
With a discography ...Mehr anzeigen stretching from Wild Honey (2018) to the present, and a fully self-produced Velvet Underground & Nico covers EP arriving in 2026, Alden's sound is ever-evolving — never settling, always searching. She has supported Jon Gomm and Cara Rose, performed on stages in London and New York, and appeared at ESNS, and now embarks on her largest European tour to date across The Netherlands, Germany, and France.
