Live at Donau115, the Bondarev / Downes / Ginsburg / Michel Band brings together four distinctive voices from the European improvised music scene for an evening of adventurous contemporary jazz, deep interaction, and spontaneous musical storytelling. Trumpeter Dima Bondarev’s lyrical intensity meets the harmonic imagination of pianist Kit Downes, grounded by the elastic groove and sensitivity of bassist Josh Ginsburg and drummer Marc Michel. Moving fluidly between original compositions, free improvisation, and modern jazz language, the quartet creates music that is both intimate and expansive — full of texture, risk, and collective energy.

Dima Bondarev is one of the emerging voices of contemporary European jazz, known for a sound that combines lyrical depth, rhythmic urgency, and fearless improvisation. A graduate of Jazz Institut Berlin and former participant in the Focusyear program in Basel, he has collaborated with artists including Aaron Parks, Kit Downes, Gilad Hekselman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Lionel Loueke, Joey Baron, Jorge Rossy, Jim Black and Wolfgang Muthspiel.
Kit Downes is internationally acclaimed for his deeply expressive approach to piano and improvisation, working across jazz, contemporary classical, and experimental music. His collaborations span an extensive range of leading European improvisers and ensembles.
Josh Ginsburg is an in-demand bassist and improviser whose playing is noted for its warmth, flexibility, and strong melodic sensibility within adventurous contemporary jazz settings.
Marc Michel is recognized for his dynamic, highly interactive drumming and broad stylistic range, performing with many leading musicians on the European jazz scene.
