A family of seven opens up about their traumatic experiences
during the father’s ten-year battle with depression. Unvarnished and with a
touch of humour, all the family members offer deep insights into their
worlds in front of the camera. Together, they confront current conflicts, voice
painful truths, journey into the past and try to reconnect
as a family.
Seen from the outside, we appear to be a harmonious family of seven.
But in reality, we are on the verge of falling apart. At
family gatherings, my second-youngest brother repeatedly causes conflict. When we
finally all sit down together, one thing becomes clear: our father’s ten-year
depression during our childhood has left deep wounds
– wounds that continue to have an impact to this day.
I am the eldest son – and had already moved out by then. Now I want to
understand what happened. I visit every family member at home and
try to capture our different experiences from that time. Coming
to terms with this is a painful journey into the past –
but also an attempt to reconnect as adults. And
perhaps, for the first time, to be truly honest with one another.
