The artist, known for his series of "paintings on non-traditional surfaces", is now bringing his installation 'Lapides' (gravestones) to Berlin, in which he collects 100 old computers, paints over each one with bright and garish colours and inscribes them with the names of their former owners.
Alex Flemming talks about life and death in three levels of meaning: the death of the machine itself, the future death of the current technology and the death of the people who owned the computer.
Because the exhibition takes place in the Spree, Flemming suggests an association between the 'Motor Ship Heimatland' and Charon's boat, which would take us to the afterlife while the artist mutates into a captain.
About the artist:
The 70 year old Brazilian has been living between Berlin and Sao Paulo for 30 years, and has studios in both cities. He is known for his multiple researches of painting on objects such as his own clothes, furniture, suitcases, records, photos, etc. In Sao Paulo, he has completed two major art in architecture projects: the SUMARE metro station and the façade of the State Library. In 2016, the MAC Museum of Contemporary Art Sao Paulo organised his first retrospective. His first exhibition in Berlin was in 1992, and since then he has been a regular participant in the Berlin art scene. One work from his series "Flying Carpets" belongs to the collection of the Berlinische Galerie, and another from the SUMARE series belongs to the Ibero-American Institute.
