She’s the last girl you’d ever expect to do something crazy; just last week she up and left everybody saying; she’ll crash and burn, come home, crying she ain’t no Martina McBride but……….
It’s a long way from small town nowhere to Music Row but if you never try you’ll never know. Kerstin was born and raised in a small town near Frankfurt/Main, Germany and has always wanted to pursue her dreams to become a country music singer. “My parents used to listen to a folk/country radio station. They played a lot of country music and that really shaped me and yes my heart is country”. She can’t recall a time when music wasn’t her first priority and primary motivation. She remembers that she couldn’t wait to get out of school. “I would race home, go to my room, and sing my heart out to an imaginary audience of 10,000 fans,” she says smiling. To learn the words to her favourite songs she would listen to cassette tapes and press play, pause, rewind, over and over again until she had the songs memorized. While other kids her age were listening to rap and pop music, she stayed true to herself and was even made fun of at times. “Someone once asked me ‘what sixteen year old sits in her room and listens to Johnny Cash on a Friday night?’ Well, I do” she replied.
Years later and one bad break up Kerstin decided to go after her dreams. “I focused on studying and put this whole music thing on hold but I missed something and felt the time was right for breaking new ground. So I decided to go to Nashville but I didn’t know a single person in Nashville.” A friend from Dallas recommended Kerstin to contact the ADN in Nashville. “I sent in a recording and waited. I really didn’t expect an answer but eventually that call from Nashville came.”
“So I packed my bags, my guitar, my hopes, my dreams, my broken heart and stories to tell and went to Nashville.” Kerstin says Nashville was magical and felt like it was where she belonged. She got to co- write songs with some accomplished songwriters; she didn’t even know she had it in her to write. “I remember well the day of my first co write. I thought about so many things; what am I doing here, are my song ideas good enough, am I good enough, shouldn’t I be at university and learn something about Hegel’s philosophy….. It was crazy but then Sarah, Sarah Majors my very first co writer, walked into the office. She smiled, hugged me and treated like I was one of her best friends." Kerstin is currently working on her debut album, so she is living back in Germany and travelling back and forth to Nashville.
“Having to make a choice in life is difficult but I choose music and right now I truly believe that is the right path I’m on.”
„I guess you could blame Hank or Merle that this German girl came runnin’ to the Guitar Town”.
