Bio

four-O-four is a Leeuwarden (NL) based underground electro project. It was founded in 2000 by Tox in Bremen, Germany. In 2004 the ex-singer of Sonstiges (DE), DJ Phönix, joined the project as regular guest musician. Together with him three albums were produced: Illusion (the project's debut album, 2005), Sui Caedere (2008) and Supernova (2010). Illusion and Sui Caedere also featured several coops with Halkan Onuk of Rumble Militia.


In 2009 the project moved to Leeuwarden (Fryslân, Netherlands). Due to personal reasons DJ Phönix left the project at that time. Following were several cooperations
with musicians from the German MIDI Musiker Forum. By the way, registered users can every once in a while hear a new song there. *hint, hint* And on the graphic side of things I'm now working together with Mary-Jane.

The project is a studio only deal, no live performances at all.



The style is hard to describe, I call it Underground Electro. It is a mixture of electro, industrial, rock, punk and crossover. And on top of it the style varies by album:


The debut album, Illusion (2005), was created almost exclusively with loops (except for the vocals, naturally) and has a wide variety of styles blended into crossover, I'd call it a chilled out plate of electro crossover.


The second album, Sui Caedere (2008), reflects the move from loops to MIDI and software instruments. It's sound is mainly industrial with powernoise elements. Nothing for the sensitive souls. And don't be surprised: it's gonna be loud!


The third album, Supernova (2010), moved back to electro crossover, adding punk and rock to the mix. Now produced with MIDI completely and some coops with guitar players: Space from Degenerate Idol (DE) and Jimi Photon (US).


The fourth album, Silence (yet unreleased), has a quite big change in style, especially because four-O-four Studios was upgraded with lots of hardware, featuring a vintage Korg MS-20 (recently midified) and a Yamaha FB-01 along with several guitar effects. The musical focus shifted towards more rock and punk elements as well as more industrial. Several cooperations add to the album's variety. So far there is no deadline for the release, currently several possibilities are being evaluated.

Interview

Wann und wie habt ihr angefangen gemeinsam zu musizieren?
Ich hab irgendwann 2000 damit begonnen mich mit digital produzierter Mucke zu beschäftigen; nach meinem heutigen Maßstab auf ziemlich dilletantische Art und Weise, aber irgendwie muß man ja anfangen. ;) Mein Dad, selber Musiker, hat mir in den folgenden Jahren versucht beizubringen, wie's mit dem muckemachen funktioniert und das hat Früchte getragen.

Was ist das Besondere / Eigene an eurer Musik?
Ich bin ein musikalisch ziemlich offener Geist. Bei mir landet so ziemlich alles von Klassik über Punk, Rock, Metal bis hin zu Electro der harten Art aufm Plattenteller und das schlägt sich in meiner Mucke wieder, die ein Mix aus den verschiedensten Stilen darstellt.

Was sind eure Lieblingsbands?
Also ich liebe Pink Floyd über alles, dazu gesellen sich Bands wie Jane's Addiction, Fugazi, Such A Surge, The Almighty, Seabound, Funker Vogt, Front 242, Frontline Assembly, Dance Or Die, und und und. Eigentlich sind's viel zu viele Bands um sie alle zu nennen. ;)

Welche Alben sehen nie das Innenleben eures CD-Players?
R'n'B oder prolliger Hip-Hop á la 50 Cent hat in meinem CD-Player nichts zu suchen. Genauso sind Schlager verbannt.

Seid ihr ganz zufrieden mit eurem aktuellen Songmaterial? Arbeitet ihr an neuem? Was wird anders?
Wäre ich nicht zufrieden würde ich das Material nicht veröffentlichen. Derzeit arbeite ich am nächsten Album, dass wohl "Silence" heißen wird. Der größte Unterschied liegt sicherlich in musikalisch höherer Qualität und besserem Sound. Das liegt vorallendingen an meinem Umstieg von Software auf Hardware zur Klangerzeugung und Manipulation.

Mit welchen Bands würdet ihr euch am ehesten in eine Schublade stecken lassen?
Wenn das mal so einfach wäre; am gröbsten funktioniert es wohl mit elektronischen Bands wie Front 242, Funker Vogt oder Frontline Assembly. Vielleicht passt aber auch Dance Or Die oder DAF besser, je nachdem welchen Song ich grade zum Vergleich heranziehe.

Wann würdet ihr sagen "Wir haben es geschafft?"
Also Weltruhm muß es nicht gerade sein. Ich wäre schon damit zufrieden, wenn ich mit einem Album genug Geld verdienen würde, um mein Heimstudio mit ein bisschen neuer Hardware zu bereichern.
